My 2018 Vanwinefest Recommendations – Portuguese and Spanish Red Wines

I blame Malbec for the reason why my list doesn’t contain any red Spanish wines as I’ve grown to love red wine that have mellow elegant tannins. But I do adore Port and Sherries because they’re so fruit forward and a little sweet which is why I call myself the Wine Sweetie. I leave the serious wine reviews for those people who like to swish and spit while I like the easy sipping wines that pair so nicely with a nice hot bath and a romantic chick flick.  So the following are my 2018 Vanwinefest recommendations for Portuguese and Spanish reds that I call “sweets for the sweet”.

If you were lucky, some of the bottles of wine sold at the Vancouver International Wine Festival were signed by the winemaker.

Spain Familia Castaño Monastrell Dulce 2015  $29.99 Fortified Petite Sirah and Monastrell.  With aromas of figs and raisins and dark juicy plums on the palate, this fortied wine isn’t too sweet but has plenty of dark ripe fruit on the palate,
.

Portugal Caves Messias 1995 Port $53.99 Port A nose of caramel and nuts and dark ripe fruit on the palate.  It’s elegant and not as thick and sweet as other ports with well-balanced acidity and a long smooth finish.
.
Portugal Caves Messias Port 10 Anos  $33.50 Port Red port with aromas of figs and vanilla and caramel notes.  Sweet and smooth tannins with a long finish.
.
Portugal Fonseca Porto Aged Tawny 10 Year Old  $38.99 Port A velvent nose of figs and caramel and ripe juicy blackberries on the palate resulting in a rather sweet wine with velvet tannins which is best paired with a chocolate dessert.
.
Portugal Fonseca Porto Bin No. 27 Fine Reserve Port  $24.99 Port Ruby coloured port with intense blackberry and cassis aromas and plum and cherry on the palate. Velvet tannins with luscious fruity finish.  I liked this one as it had a lighter .body than other ports.
.

Portugal Quinta do Cransto Vintage Port 2015  $15.99 Port Old wines of several varieties. Want a port that’s not as sweet or concentrated? Try Quinta do Cransto Vintage Port 2015 that has raisins on the nose and ripe juicy blackberries on the palate.  Flavours aren’t as concentrated as other ports so it’s less sweet with elegant tannins.
.
Portugal Ramos Pinto 10 Year  Port Tawny  $34.99 Port Touringa Nacional, Touriga Blanca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca.   Red port with aromas of berries and plums and dried fruit and nuts on the palate and a smooth long velvet finish.
.
Portugal Real Companhia Velha Real Companhia Velha Malvasia   $24.99 Port Malvasia and Pinot Nero. Gold coloured  with pineapple aromas and honey and nuts on palate.
.
Portugal Symington Family Estates: Graham’s / Prats & Symington Graham’s Late Bottle Vintage 2012  $24.99 Port Deep purple port with aromas of cassis and dark cherries and blackberries on the palate.  Full bodied and fresh and fruit forward with rounded tannins and velvet finish.
