Have yourself a very merry Spanish Happy Hour
at Bodega on Main

Being a long time fan of Bodega on Main even before they moved from Howe Street to Main Street, so when I heard that they started happy hour specials I was all over that like Renee Zellweger on her plastic surgeon.

Bodega on Main

I love Spanish wines as I find them so easy to drink, so at happy hour at Bodega on Main (Monday to Friday 3-6pm), I was happy to learn that there were three choices – red, white or rose  – none of which was plonk as I’ve had the Vina Esmeralda before at last year’s 25 Wines under $25 wine mingler at the Vancouver International Wine Festival. It’s a refreshing white with apricot aromas and peach and pineapple on the palate and very little minerality. My expert wine friend Ron Wilson (Cheap and Cheerful @RonWilsonVan) loved the Pasico Monastrell Shiraz and at $6 a glass for both, it’s a real steal.

As for the food, the happy hour menu is written in Spanish but I managed to translate it with my Menulator app which I had just downloaded to the iPhone in preparation for my trip to Barcelona in June.

Patatas Bravas is the Spanish version of French fries as its potatoes, garlic and other ingredients, but less fattening as it doesn’t appear to be deep fried. At $4, it’s a dish that will fill you up.

Pollo Frites – hello you had me at deep fried. Tasty crispy chicken, you can’t go wrong when you order this for only $5.

Churros served with hot dipping chocolate and vanilla mascarpone – hot and Crunchy pastry in thick chocolate sauce the way it’s served in Spain.  Don’t  go until you end your meal with this happy ending.  This wasn’t on the happy hour menu but at only $6 why say no.

Even outside happy hour, Bodega on Main prices are so affordable but with $6 wines and a happy little menu where prices range from $4 to $6 my pocketbook and my stomach are equally happy.
