Set against a picturesque view of Coal Harbour and the North Shore Mountains at Lift Bar and Grill, the Cool Climate Cool View grazing lunch event held on February 27, 2016 for the Vancouver International Wine Festival featured vineyards that are located within a few kilometres of the ocean in different continents.  Despite the distance of each winery, the wines produced in such close proximity of the ocean seems to produce wines that are fruit forward with lively acidity which were perfect with the delectable bites that were offered.  And for the price point of $75, this event was great value as there were a never-ending flow of food and 25 wines to taste..

I call myself the Wine Sweetie as I’m a typical Asian gal who loves sweet wines and wines that have pronounced fruit on the palate.  I don’t care for the taste of oak nor do I care about the complexity that tobacco and tar adds to my wine.  All I want is the pure and simple taste of grapes co-mingled with other fruit notes. And to that end, all my recommendations will reflect my personal taste.  In the following notes, I tried to indicate, wherever possible, the prices of the wines.

Mini Oyster Rockefeller

Babich Wines Babich Marlborough Pinot Gris 2014 ($17.99) New Zealand Dry wine with pear and citrus notes and well balanced acidity that proved easy to drink.
Bodegas Salentein Brut Nature Metodio Tradicional NV Argentina Loved this sparkling as it was dry, had lively acid, big bubbles and a rather creamy finish with plenty of pink grapefruit on the palate and green apple aroma.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Riesling 2014 Washington ($9.00 Website) A nice crisp wine with oodles of apples on the aroma and palate and slight minerality
Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Syrah 2013 Washington This wine is primarily Syrah with a touch of Viognier, Mourvedre and Grenache to add more flavours resulting in a jammy Syrah with soft tannins and very fruit forward. A complex wine.
