Gusto a Taste of Italy
Offers Sweet and Savoury Morsels of Italy

Call me a sap or call me a corndog but whenever I’m in Italy, the song, “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, That’s amore” keeps playing over and over in my head. Why, probably because this song just seems to encapsulate the whole Italian spirit of love, food and drink and not necessarily in that order. So would it surprise you that this song kept repeating in my head when I finally made my way to Gusto A Taste of Italy, 1610 Salt Street, which opened in Olympic Village in January 2019. But what is Gusto A Taste of Italy? Is it a bistro, wine bar, bakery, gelateria, or pizzeria? It’s all of the above, offering you sweet and savory morsels of Italy no whether what your mood.

Want an Italian spirit? Aperol Spritz with its orange liqeuer hits the spot. Or if you’re in the mood for something more potent, there’s wine, rum, tequila or even Glenlivet Scotch.

What about an authentic Italian espresso made from Jolly Coffee paired with a Cannoli. Momma Mia! Add Kahula or Baileys to make it PG.  If cannolis don’t satisfy your sweet spot, there’s not only a counter of Italian cookies, tarts, and pastries but a hugemonous revolving case of 50+ decadent desserts. Please excuse my tongue prints though.

Or if you’re craving pizza, they offer Scrocchiarella pizza which is lighter than most pizzas as it is made with Scrocchiarella flour. Now say that backwards after a few Aperol Spritzes!  There’s no menu on the website, that I noticed from the menu posted that there were 10 selections, and about two of them had no cheese.

And to end things on a sweet note, there’s about 12+ flavours of gelato (3 are dairy free sorbettos). And some crazy flavours such as Ricotta and Caramelized Figs or Marscarpone with Pear.  Below I had the Grapefruit Sorbetto as I ran into Vancouver’s very own Dean Martin, Federico Fuoco (who owns this place with his two nephews, Joe Fazio, and Nick Fazio). This was as good as any sorbetto I’ve had in Italy (and I’ve had a lot) as it was tart and sweet with very prominent grapefruit flavors.

I came here for happy hour (daily 3-7pm) which offers you a free tapa with purchase of a drink. Well, you get two bruschetta with some olives which was tasty paired with Aperol Spritz!

I did cave in and bought a Caprese Tart which is a custard with chocolate chips which I had for breakfast the next day. But happily, I also left with a non-dairy vegetarian pizza which I planned to heat up for dinner that night. Ten minutes out of the oven, although the the crust was thicker than thin crust pizza, it tasted light and was nice and crispy and not burnt like Neopolitian pizzas (which i despise) and the spicy tomato sauce had enough heat and flavour that I didn’t miss the cheese.

I’m not surprised that Gusto A Taste of Italy was bustling with people not only picking up pizzas and pastries, but relaxing while taking in the scenic village of Olympic Village, because with so many delicious offerings, you could come here for months and still not have tried everything on the menu. I’ve been to Federico’s Supper Club which is owned by Federico Fuoco where the food is always on point and so I wasn’t surprised that yet again, Gusto A Taste of Italy succeeded in featuring Italy’s best sweet and savory morsels.
