“… bittersweet, entertaining and uplifting sports drama… a feminist parable that

explores a virtually unknown chapter of this country’s sports history” — The Globe and Mail

Kay Meek Play Series will continue with the presentation of GLORY, the latest creation by playwright and choreographer Tracey Power, from Western Canada Theatre on March 29 – 30, 2019 at Kay Meek Arts Centre (1700 Mathers Ave). Based on an inspiring real-life Ontario women’s hockey team, the Kay Meek Play Series presentation of GLORY is an innovative and entertaining retelling of the Preston Rivulettes, who formed in 1930 and became championship winners — defying convention and challenging the gender divide.

In GLORY, four friends set out to prove to Canada that hockey is not a sport only for men. Set to the backdrop of the Great Depression with political tensions rising in Europe, GLORY is performed with a hybrid of hockey technique and swing dancing. Featuring electrifying dance choreography inspired by the music of the jazz era, it exuberantly captures all the thrills, excitement and tension of a great hockey game.

GLORY delves into themes of inequality and prejudice but also team dynamics and friendship. “I’ve always thought the worlds of team sports and theatre were very similar,” commented Tracey Power. “The camaraderie, the support, and the united goal that is reached by working together as a fierce ensemble of players.”

Originally produced by Western Canada Theatre and Alberta Theatre Projects, GLORY premiered in spring 2018.

AUDIENCE GUIDANCE: Minor profanity. Recommended age: 9+
