My Review of The Concierge of Vancouver
Does anyone know the concierge of Shaul Ezer’s building? Because if you do, I’d love to break into his apartment to find the crystal ball that allowed him to write and have produced, with such impeccable timing, his thought-provoking and controversial play about the housing crisis in Vancouver which has headlined the news in Vancouver the last few months.
Shaul Ezer engages the audience with an unpretentious play with real characters we love to love as we watch charismatic media superstar Fred McCashel (Frank Zotter) shame his hard-nosed girlfriend Samantha Wright (Sharon Crandall) into doing the right thing while she wrestles with her conscience. And we can’t help but admire Agnes Haddington’s (Elizabeth Kirkland) persistence in digging up the dirty truth about the bank/s role in the housing crisis. But all the world loves a dork as Abe Noseworthy (Art Kitching) auditions for Dancing with the Stars across the lobby in one of the all-too-common-empty apartment buildings of Coal Harbour makes us smile and wonder, “Do I look like that when I dance”.. It’s these little idiosyncrasies that make us, the audience, care about the characters and thus care about the outcome at the end of the play.
Shaul Ezer successfully weaves a story that intertwines the characters together into a scenario that is all too plausible and gives us pause for reflection. The Vancouver of Concierge is money well spent and gives us a welcome interruption from our current housing woes.
About The Concierge of Vancouver
The Concierge of Vancouver is the world premiere of a play satirizing the Vancouver housing crisis and looks at the consequences of skyrocketing real estate prices and living costs.. An expensive condo building in Coal Harbour, barely occupied… a reclusive donor, giving away millions of dollars each year to fund worthy causes… and, an international bank under scrutiny by a tenacious reporter… What is the connection?
This brand new comedy features Art Kitching (“Al”, a concierge), Elizabeth Kirkland (“Agnes”, a determined reporter), Sharon Crandall (“Samantha”, a banking executive) and Betty Mitchell Award winner Frank Zotter (“Fred”, a smooth talking PR specialist).
The Concierge of Vancouver is a larger than life comedy directed by Ian Farthing, a Prix Rideau Award winner. It is the second in a trilogy of plays by local writer Shaul Ezer.
