In a conversation with other food writers I’ve come to the realization that I’ve become a bit of a food snob. That’s largely due to the fact that through my various travels, I’ve had the real deal from churros with thick chocolate sauce in Pampola, Spain, thin crusted Italian pizza in Rome, blue crabs from the shorelines of Baltimore, beignets from Cafe Du Monde in N’leans and so on.
But when it comes to Jewish food, oy vay, did you know my last name used to be Goldberg. Yes and living in the Jewish mecca of Los Angeles, I’ve been to Langer’s Delis which is as good as it gets, next to Schwartz’s in Montreal.
But now there’s Rosemary Rocksalt (www.rosemaryrocksalt.com), the next evolution of Siegel’s Bagels which is a 23 year institution started by Joey Siegel because of the lack of Montreal-style bagels in Vancouver. With her father’s blessing, Parise and partner Ken Sim are scheduled to open a new bagel café in early April at 1669 Lonsdale Ave, North Vancouver.
Here at Rosemary Rocksalt, bagels start with the highest quality ingredients, are kettle boiled, and then baked in a 10,000 pound stone-hearth flame oven on both sides until crispy. The oven is cleaned after each batch to ensure the next batch’s ingredients aren’t compromised.
12 signature flavours of bagels are baked on premises daily to ensure freshness with Rosemary Rocksalt being the most popular flavour. The smoked meat for the luscious bagwiches are flown in from Montreal and you have your choice of cream cheese flavours to choose from Vegi Lite to Sundried Tomato.
I tried the multigrain bagel with smoked meat and the bagel was crispy and crunchy on the outside. Although I’m not much of a carb fanatic, the inside was so fresh that I couldn’t resist inhaling it because nothing tastes as great as fresh baked goods. The smoked meat was as tender as any Montreal smoked meat I’ve tasted.
So fans of Siegel’s Bagels who live on the North Shore can now rejoice because your ultimate bagel experience at Rosemary Rocksalt is here.
