Sammy Piccolo Spade Brings Fresh Day-to-Night Italian
Service to Commercial Drive

Spade, by Sammy Piccolo (Prado Cafe) promises more than coffee drinks will flow at its new Commercial Drive hub opening today. This new café and restaurant concept aims to become a community go-to within the eclectic and bustling neighbourhood known for its diverse dining and social scene.

Spade marks a true departure for Piccolo who has long had a hand in the coffee-oriented industry (as an original partner of Caffe Artigiano and owner of Prado locations). This project sees him realize a longstanding desire to infuse authentic Italian flavours within the best of day and night service for an enhanced guest experience overall.

Spade (‘sword’ in Italian), will provide coffee lovers and culinary passionistas a neighbourhood haven where they can banter about the latest news over a casual drink, specialty pastries (made in-house), egg sandwiches, catch the latest sports game with a cold brew post-work, (Powell Street, Parallel 49, 33 Acres are on-tap) or tuck into a family-style feast with a bottle of wine or cocktail as the room transitions to restaurant mode at night. The decidedly Italian fare at Piccolo’s newest venture evokes a romantic sense of nostalgia centred on Sammy’s Italian roots and features plenty of share plates to entice guests to linger and enjoy.

Aside from Spade’s own custom 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters blends and selections of sweet and savoury pastries (pesche con crema, pistachio and almond frangipane, eclairs), the menu is laden with dishes to tantalize. Nosh on classic house made focaccia with herbs, medjool dates stuffed with chevre, bacon and balsamic, roasted cauliflower with ricotta, salsa verde, mixed charcuterie and cheese boards, gnocchi with squid ink, black garlic cream and lemon, insalata di Haloumi and plenty of classic pastas guaranteed to satiate.

Spade will also serve up a tight list of Italian wine, a thoughtfully designed cocktail selection featuring a classic Negroni, Espresso Martini and Prosecco Margarita. Piccolo has also tapped into longstanding partnerships with specialty local and international suppliers to round out his menu: sourcing goods from familiar names such as Avalon Dairy (traceable milk), Cioffi’s and Two Rivers Meats.

Modeled after a modern European style coffee bar, Spade is reflective of Piccolo’s extensive travels and Italian roots where old world tradition meld with a comforting aesthetic to draw patrons in and invite them to stay. Spade’s expansive bar area features a Spirit Triplette Espresso machine and Seraphim Pourover by Curtis to ensure an unparalleled coffee experience. Slate floors stretch throughout the 40-seat space that features vaulted ceilings and plenty of earthtones to break up the pristine white. Aside from a lush living wall punctuated by a custom emerald green moss-cut out in the shape of an actual spade, the room is nicely anchored by a locally made fourteen-foot communal table hewn from 120 year-old reclaimed cedar.

Borrowing design inspiration from his popular Prado Café locations, Spade will feature an expanded and seasonally adapted menu to fuel both early risers and night owls with full restaurant service as well as those with a hankering for Sunday brunch. Shares Piccolo, “being Italian you always go to your Mama or Nonna’s place for brunch on Sunday, so I wanted to try to recreate that sense of warmth at Spade to capture a comfortable familiarity and make it a spot anyone can head to when craving a taste of home.”

Helping guide the overall vision for Spade to fruition is Chef/ GM Kathleen Pearce, a graduate of George Brown Culinary School who has trained under notable Chefs across Canada (working at Charcut, Pigeonhole, Parts & Labour, Royal Dinette). A relative newcomer to Vancouver, Chef Pearce is pleased to take the helm of Spade and is excited to grow it into a go-to for locals thanks to a creative take on Italian cuisine, warm ambiance and top-notch service.
