Through Spain at Savour Spain

 

Is there anything better than spending time in Spain where you can truly savour all that she has to offer from $2 cavas and $2 tapas. Aye yay yay – I had that opportunity a year and a half ago when I spent 17 days wandering the streets of Barcelona. But the next best thing to experiencing Spain was to attend one of the Vancouver International Wine Festival events like Savour Spain where the lively cava bubbles from Freixenet and black ink paella from  per se Social Corner made me feel like doing the flamenco.

But it seems that only white wines and roses make my feet kick up in glee and the Spanish reds leave my head and heart thumping to the beat of a hangover, so the following are my favorite whites from the Savour Spain event which are easy sipping wines which pair so nicely with a hot summer day.

Bodegas Rosario Vera 2016 Honoro Vera Blanco 2016 – $18.99
Viura 50%, Tempranillo Blanco 35%, Maturana Blanca 15%. Yellow wine with green flecks. Intense aromas of pineapple and bananas with citrus fruit on the palate. Fresh and not too sweet with a perfect balance of acidity and fruitiness

Campo Viejo Tempranillo Rose 2016 – $13.99
Tempranillo 100%. Light red rose with aromas of cherries and rhubarb and pink grapefruit on the plate. Lively acidity and a long finish.

Familia Castaño Monastrell Rose 2016 – $11.99
Monastrell 100%.. Intense strawberry aromas and juicy red cherries on the palate with vibrant acidity.

Freixenet Elyssia Pinot Noir NV – $21.99
Pinot Noir, Trepat. Pinot Noirs seem to produce roses full of robust fruit flavours and this one is no exception with its Intense aromas of raspberries and blackberries with red currants and red cherries on the palate. Well-balanced acidity and a long refreshing finish.

Freixenet Carta Nevada Semi-Seco NV – $14.99
Macabeo 33%, Xarel-lo 33% and Parellada 33%. Gold colored cava with aromas of lemon zest and green apples and white flowers on the palate. Medium bubbles with soft acidity. Love this as there’s just enough acid to tickle my fancy without punching me in the nose.

Grupo Chivite Las Fincas Rosado 2016 – $26.99
65% Garnacha 65%, Tempranillo 35%. Pale pink wine with an intense stone fruit, pomegranate and berries and smooth palate with grapefruit and well-balanced acidity.

Paired with our Spanish wines were a variety of typical Spanish tapas from per se Social Corner such as the following.

  • Boquerones, Spanish white anchovies, goat cheese, Spanish smoked red peppers and Miel Marmelada
  • Pulpo a la Gallega, Pulpo jus confit potatoes, butter, olive oil and smoked paprika
  • Spanish beer braised Beef, Dijon mustard, salsa de tomato and Spanish extra virgin oil.
  • Seafood paella and black ink squid paella
